I have good success setting the distro and receiving right at the border so your beavers can make more trips. I do think people might make routes too long through, beavers even with the bonus can't carry that much, so long distance seriously cuts into throughput. Though found once you setup the limits right works pretty well. Yeah the districts take a bit to get used to. just be careful when attempting to remove paths on dams. The destroy tool does support click and drag.
